John 12:27-30 Father, Glorify Your Name

John 12:31-36 Ruler Of This World
JOHN 12:27-28  27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

What did Jesus request God the Father to do?
“Father, glorify your name” (John 12:27).

How did God the Father respond from heaven about His name?
“I have both glorified it and will glorify it again” (John 12:28).

How had He already "glorified" His name?
He demonstrated His love for us by sending His only Son to the world as a human being.

What is that comparable to?
The Creator God, who is holy, entering the sinful world as a human being is a far greater sacrifice than a human being - a creature - entering a cesspool as a worm - another creature.

How will God the Father "glorify" His name "again"?
He will demonstrate His love for us again by having His only Son die on the cross to pay the death penalty due for our sins and thereby save us from sin and hell.

Was that a peripheral reason for Jesus coming to the world?
No, it was the "purpose" (John 12:27).

Was fulfilling that purpose pleasant for Jesus?
No, His "soul" was "troubled" by it, but He had to go through with it: "what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’?" (John 12:27).

Why?
See John 18.

JOHN 12:29-30  29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.

Did the crowd hear God the Father's response to Jesus?
Loudly enough that some thought, "it had thundered," while others heard "spoken" (John 12:29) words.

For whom had God the Father spoken?
The crowd: Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake" (John 12:30).

Why?
Just before Jesus' earthly ministry began three years prior, God the Father had verbally anointed Jesus before a large audience (see Lamb of God). As that ministry nears its closing climax, He was again verbally affirming His Son for the "sake" of the audience, who should heed Him.
